KERMESSE FANASTIQUE

Here is the best Dutch stop-motion animated commercial from 1948 that you will see all week. Kermesse Fantastique, a ten minute promotion for Philips Electronics, is directed by Jozsef Misik and presented by Joop Geesink (who art directed some of George Pál's Puppetoons). There's so much to love here, from the Art Deco star-lit styling to the glorious dark ride trip. Thank you Brian O. for directing me to this wonderful bit of secret fun!

i have been visiting your site for over a year and it has brought me great pleasure for the duration, but i still find it amazing that there were television sets in people's homes in the forties!

i believe that's what they call a non-sequitur.

i should have been commenting all along on all the wonderful things you have posted but there you go. i would like to single out Flip! in particular for giving me a chance to show people what my childhood was basically like, being born in 1959. the work you put into it really paid off and you got it right. just wanted you to know that from someone who was there. thanx.

p.s. i never actually sent off for the U-Control Ghost/Monster but i was a member of the Horror Fan Club with the incredibly dissappointing paper monster masks and the actually(i thought)impressive Moon Monster poster which i had for years and am now looking for again. i've managed to hang onto a lot of stuff, though.

This is an incredible short! There's more stop motion in this that a typical Harryhausen feature (and that's not a slam against Harryhausen, either).

Super fantastic short, like a View Master Carnival reel come to life... the thing that is most striking to me is the constant beat of it all, it's fun and never slows down for a minute, scenes flow together seamlessly. Great camera placement and inventive angles, so much detail too as the camera pans across the carnival... a brilliant clip. Any idea if Philips Electronics produced any more of these?

George Pal produced a number of Puppetoon promotions for Philips prior to coming to America. These would be predecessors to Kermesse Fanastique. The Puppetoon Movie, with extra shorts, is only $9.99 at Amazon and worth every penny. Some of the Philips promos are included, too. Fun stuff.

Can you imagine what it would be like to see Kermesse Fanastique with better picture quality?
